Florida’s swift action during this escalating Middle East crisis is putting its population front and center. On June 20, 2025, Governor Ron DeSantis personally welcomed a plane from Israel at Tampa International Airport, marking the beginning of a coordinated evacuation mission to bring stranded Americans home.
Florida has chartered multiple flights, previously evacuating around 1,500 people, including students on Birthright and study abroad programs, church groups, and families, through both direct flights and rerouted passages via Cyprus. The state’s Division of Emergency Management (DEM), led by Kevin Guthrie, has worked tirelessly, coordinating with Grey Bull Rescue, Israeli authorities, colleges, and other agencies to keep operations running 24/7.
During his remarks, DeSantis made it clear that Florida’s mission isn’t limited to residents. “We won’t turn people away,” he emphasized, reinforcing the state’s commitment to all Americans in need. The governor also praised the professionalism and dedication of DEM staff, notably Deputy Executive Director Keith Pruitt and Chief of Staff Jake Felder, whose regional expertise was vital to the mission.
DeSantis underscored the unpredictable nature of the conflict, pointing out that Ben Gurion Airport may remain shut for weeks and highlighting the logistical challenges it poses. He also noted Florida’s experience in handling crises, like hurricanes and humanitarian rescues, has primed it for fast, effective responses when lives are on the line.
Looking ahead, DeSantis assured the public that more flights are scheduled, especially for those Americans, including college students, still stranded in Israel. With potential evacuation numbers reaching thousands, he pledged Florida will do “whatever is possible” to get everyone to safety.
This extraordinary operation at TPA isn’t just about logistics. It reflects Florida’s ethos of resilience, courage, and solidarity in times of crisis. As missiles continue to fly and diplomatic uncertainty lingers, the state stands ready to act, ensuring Americans—whether Floridians or not—find refuge and reassurance amid turmoil.
