What’s in the Water!? Tampa’s River O’ Green Turns the Hillsborough River Bright Green

The Day Downtown Tampa Turns Green

Every March, downtown Tampa gathers along the Hillsborough River for a tradition that still feels slightly unreal the first time you see it. River O’ Green returns on Saturday March 14th 2026, and around 11am the river begins its annual shift to a deep emerald shade.

The coloring uses an eco friendly dye and spreads quickly through the water, drawing a steady crowd along the Riverwalk and throughout Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park. Phones come out. People lean over the railing. The skyline reflects off water that suddenly looks nothing like it did an hour earlier. It’s the kind of visual that makes you pause, even if you’ve seen it before.

What Actually Goes Into the Water

The green comes from a biodegradable, environmentally safe dye specifically designed for temporary water coloring. Event organizers have consistently stated that the formula is non toxic and safe for wildlife. It does not permanently stain the river and gradually dissipates after the event.

The dye is used in controlled amounts and is intended purely for visual effect during the festival. Within a relatively short period of time, the Hillsborough River returns to its normal color. There is no chemical spectacle happening beneath the surface. It is a temporary transformation meant to create a shared visual experience along the waterfront

A March Tradition That Signals Spring

Once the river changes, the park settles into its rhythm. Live music carries across the lawn, families stake out space on the grass, and downtown Tampa feels fully awake. River O’ Green is free to attend! Food vendors line the park with festival staples and cold drinks. The Riverwalk stays busy as people drift between the stage, the water and shaded corners of the lawn.

River O’ Green has become one of the most recognizable March events in Tampa. Set against Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park and the Hillsborough River, it anchors the start of St. Patrick’s season downtown.  If you are looking for things to do in Tampa this waterfront celebration belongs on your calendar.

Get there early, claim a spot along the river, and watch downtown shift into spring mode!
