Teeing Off for Those Who Serve: Family in Flight Hosts Tampa Bay Charity Golf Tournament

Imagine celebrating your child's birthday through a phone screen, missing another family dinner, or watching the person you love navigate life's biggest moments from hundreds of miles away. For many military families, these aren't occasional sacrifices during deployment. They're part of everyday life, and a Tampa Bay nonprofit is working to change that reality, one family at a time.
On Monday December 7th 2026, Family in Flight is bringing golfers, local businesses, and community supporters together at Carrollwood Country Club in Tampa for its Charity Golf Scramble & Classic. While there will be plenty of competition on the course, the real victory organizers are working toward is something far more meaningful: helping military families stay connected when service keeps them apart.
The Sacrifices We Don't Always See Behind the Uniform
When Americans think about military families being separated, deployment usually comes to mind. But there's another reality that receives far less attention. Known as geo-baching, short for geographic bachelor living, it happens when service members live separately from their spouses and children because of military assignments, financial circumstances, or decisions made to preserve stability at home. For some families, remaining in one place means children can stay in their schools, spouses can maintain their careers, and households can avoid another disruptive move. Unfortunately, that stability can come at an enormous emotional cost when one parent is living hundreds or even thousands of miles away.
That's where Family in Flight, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, steps in. The organization helps military spouses, children, and service members navigate separation through emotional support, practical resources, community connections, and travel assistance. By using donated airline miles, credit card points, and financial contributions, Family in Flight works to create opportunities for families to reunite in person. There's a difference between thanking someone for their service and recognizing the sacrifices being made by the people waiting for them at home. Family in Flight is encouraging Tampa Bay to do both.
One Golf Tournament, One Powerful Reason to Show Up
The Family in Flight Charity Golf Scramble & Classic will bring supporters together for an 18-hole, four-person scramble featuring closest-to-the-pin, longest-drive, and hole-in-one contests. Participants can also look forward to breakfast, live music, a silent auction, an awards celebration, and opportunities to connect with other community-minded businesses and residents. The tournament takes place on National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, adding another layer of significance to an event centered around military service, family, and sacrifice.
Registration and breakfast begin at 7:30am, followed by a 9am shotgun start. The awards ceremony and silent auction are scheduled for 2pm, with dinner festivities beginning at 3pm. Individual registration is $150 per golfer, and local businesses can participate through sponsorship opportunities ranging from $500 to $5,000. Those who aren't golfers can still support the organization's mission through donations, including eligible airline miles and credit card points.
For families navigating long-distance military life, something as ordinary as being together for a weekend can mean everything. A child getting to hug their parent, a couple finally spending time in the same room, or a family enjoying a few uninterrupted days together are the kinds of moments this nonprofit hopes to make possible. Tampa Bay has an opportunity to turn a round of golf into something that lasts far beyond the final hole. Because when the scorecards are put away and the tournament is over, the impact that matters most won't be measured in strokes. It'll be measured in the connections military families are able to maintain and the moments they get to share.
