Tampa Bay Is Headed for Its Coldest Morning of the Season
Tampa Bay is lining up for a true cold snap this week as a strong cold front pushes through late Wednesday into Thursday. Forecasts show near-freezing temperatures across much of West Central Florida, with Freeze Watches in effect for inland areas late Thursday night into Friday morning.
The National Weather Service says some inland locations could fall into the upper 20s by sunrise Friday. That would make this the coldest stretch the region has seen so far this winter. This isn’t a slow cool-down either. Once the front passes, temperatures drop quickly, setting up ideal conditions for frost and freeze development overnight.
What to Expect Overnight Thursday into Friday
Rain chances move in late Wednesday night into early Thursday, followed by a cooler and breezy Thursday across the region. The bigger concern comes after sunset. As winds ease overnight temperatures fall fast, especially away from the water.
Inland communities are most exposed since they cool more efficiently without the warming influence of the bay or Gulf. Coastal neighborhoods may still see cold mornings, but inland counties face the greatest risk for freeze conditions.
These temperatures can damage sensitive plants, impact crops, and cause issues with exposed outdoor plumbing and irrigation systems. Marine conditions also turn hazardous behind the front, creating a rough window for boaters through Friday morning.
