A Familiar Tampa Smoke Shop Name Lands in a Serious Drug Case

For plenty of people in Tampa, Hippie Crib sounds like a local smoke shop brand, not the center of a narcotics investigation. That alone makes people stop and look twice. Ryan Perez, the owner of two Hippie Crib shops in Tampa, was arrested in Spring Hill after investigators said he was buying narcotics on the dark web with cryptocurrency and selling them in the Bay Area.

This was not described as a quick bust that came out of nowhere. Investigators said they had been looking into Perez for more than a year after receiving information that he was dealing drugs. Much of the alleged activity was tied to mail order drug sales on the dark web, and the case eventually reached federal involvement. That timeline makes it clear this was something that built over time, not a one day discovery.

Investigators said a break in the case came from a Pasco County death investigation that became an overdose homicide case. From there, they worked their way up a supply chain until they landed on Perez, who they say supplied the MDMA connected to it. That detail alone shifts how heavy this situation actually is.

What Investigators Say They Found Makes the Case Harder to Ignore

When investigators searched Perez’s home, they said they found 2 pounds of MDMA, 10 counterfeit Adderall pills, 14½ grams of LSD, 2 pounds of psilocybin mushrooms, 1 pound of marijuana plants, and 20 pounds of other types of marijuana. It points to volume, variety, and a setup that goes beyond personal use. The charges reflect that too, including trafficking MDMA, trafficking LSD, possession of psilocybin mushrooms with intent to sell, and multiple marijuana related charges tied to plant form, wax, and vapes.

One detail that stuck was how investigators described the THC side of what they found. They said any way THC could be adjusted, it was there. That paints a pretty clear picture of just how much product was involved on that side of the operation without stretching beyond what was actually reported.

The Story Gets Even Heavier Once You Follow the Supply Chain

The way investigators said they built this case adds another layer. The widow of the man who died told deputies she knew who supplied the MDMA. From there, investigators traced it step by step through multiple suppliers until they reached Perez. They also said the MDMA tied to that case was about two and a half times stronger than what is typically seen on the street.

Investigators also said Perez was allegedly buying chemicals from multiple countries and packaging and distributing them locally. They warned those substances could include synthetic opioids, cannabinoids, K2, spice, and other dangerous compounds that users may not even realize they are taking.
