ZooTampa's $150 Million Expansion Will Bring New Animals, Attractions, and a Massive South American Adventure!

Big things are coming to ZooTampa at Lowry Park! Hillsborough County commissioners have approved a $75 million funding agreement supporting an ambitious $150 million renovation and expansion project that will transform one of Tampa Bay's most popular family destinations over the next 15 years.

The investment will bring major upgrades to existing animal habitats, new dining and entertainment experiences, and an expansive South American wildlife section. ZooTampa will match the county's $75 million investment through its own revenue and private fundraising, creating a long-term improvement plan focused on animal conservation, education, and unforgettable experiences for visitors.

A New South American Adventure Is Coming to ZooTampa

One of the most exciting parts of the expansion is a 14-acre South American-themed section planned across North Boulevard near Lowry Park. The project would transform property currently occupied by city maintenance facilities into an immersive wildlife destination, opening an area that visitors cannot currently access without eliminating the park's existing public green space.

The new section is expected to introduce incredible animal species, including jaguars, giant river otters, harpy eagles, and other South American wildlife. Plans also feature beautifully landscaped habitats, a new restaurant, an event courtyard, and additional guest experiences. The expansion could eventually provide access toward the Hillsborough River, creating exciting possibilities for visitors arriving from other parts of Tampa.

ZooTampa's existing attractions are also getting some much-needed attention. Major renovations are planned for older habitats throughout the Asia, Australia, and Africa sections, including improvements to the tiger habitat, primate exhibits, and elephant facilities. A new family-friendly ride is also part of the proposed improvements, giving families even more to enjoy during their visits.

A New Chapter for One of Tampa Bay's Favorite Family Destinations

Hillsborough County's investment will come from its half-cent Community Investment Tax, with up to $5 million allocated annually over 15 years. ZooTampa will contribute matching funds, helping make the $150 million transformation possible through a public-private partnership.

The improvements will happen in phases rather than all at once. ZooTampa officials anticipate planning beginning in 2027, with initial construction potentially starting in 2028. Renovations to existing exhibits are expected to come first, while the massive South American expansion will develop during later stages of the project and remains subject to additional agreements with the City of Tampa.

For Tampa Bay families, the expansion promises an exciting future filled with new animals, upgraded attractions, and more opportunities to connect with wildlife. Following the recent opening of ZooTampa's Florida Waters experience, this latest investment continues the zoo's efforts to expand its conservation programs and create memorable experiences for generations to come.

With $150 million in improvements planned, ZooTampa is preparing to become an even bigger must-visit destination in Tampa Bay!
